Parenting Education Workshop
Elise Wollemborg joined KWEC in Tsabong in June of 2025. Prior to doing so, she served as a researcher for the Centre primarily collecting data on Sub-Saharan Maternal Health and anti-gender based violence parenting tecniques. Supported by Notre Dame’s Kellogg Institute and Center for Development of the Whole Child her in country work focused on strengthening anti-defilement parenting education and exploring opportunities to support maternal healthcare delivery in the Kgalagadi Region.
Elise designed and implemented a pilot parenting workshop in collaboration with local social workers and the Tsabong Deputy Council Secretary’s Office. The workshop advanced education on anti-defilement tactics, gender-equitable parenting practices, non-violent discipline, and increased involvement of male caregivers in child protection. Participants were offered childcare, a nutritious meal, and a community to share and learn alongside. The pilot receivedoverwhelmingly positive feedback and laid the foundation for future monthly workshops in surrounding villages. Elise continues to support this initiative remotely through grant writing and program development to ensure long-term sustainability.
In addition, Elise conducted a systems-based assessment of maternal healthcare at the Tsabong Maternity Clinic. By shadowing healthcare professionals and engaging in conversations with clinic staff, she identified key strengths and areas for growth, including community education needs and resource limitations. She facilitated early steps toward collaboration between KWEC and the clinic by designing informational materials and compiling actionable recommendations based on staff feedback. She enjoyed simultaneously assisting wherever possible, be that taking vitals, scribing for providers, or running supplies across the clinic.
Her experience strengthened her commitment to ethical global service and sustainable community-driven development. She continues to support KWEC remotely and hopes to return to Tsabong soon!
